There is magic in creating something. Building something. Watching it come alive. It could be anything. A business or a book. A house or a household. It’s all part of the same spectrum. What makes it more satisfying than most other things? Okay before delving into the question, it is important to clarify that creation is not for everyone. Some people love to keep things running, not building. But for many of us, creation gives life some meaning.

Why is it more satisfying?

One, taking anything from zero to one is a matter of wonder. Where nothing exists, you come in and you leave an imprint of yourself. Second, ownership of your actions makes you more responsible. When your actions determine outcomes, you are more prone to being responsible, more disciplined, more driven. Three, fruits of labour taste sweet. Hard work is essentially an attempt to strike at a large dopamine rush, in case you end up succeeding.

On the other hand, building something can lead to fatigue and burnout and a lot of stress. Things go wrong all the time and that’s the truth of life. A perfectly working model gets disrupted and you lose it all. Despair and desolation become your bedfellows and you start regretting everything that you do. It is at this time that you should realise that failing is a part of life. Disruption should be met with innovation.

Why the musings on building today? I don’t know. Perhaps it is what is on my mind. Perhaps it is what I must be doing. Until then, I will build this blog.
